Load Shedding Systems are developed to prevent or minimize production losses at facilities after a fault on power supply with contributing to the continuity of critical processes. The fault could be caused by transient voltage and frequency fluctuation or an outage.
A Load Shedding System shall detect grid faults and run the load shedding scenario just before decoupling from the grid to continue to supply the most critical loads. For this purpose, uncritical loads have to be deenergized according to the power supply from the grid and the type of the fault in terms of milliseconds. So, the plant in island mode, could supply its critical processes via its own generators without an interruption and a loss of quality. Some grid faults might not cause decoupling, in such a condition, no load shall be deenergized by the Load Shedding System.
For those plants, which have no generators synchronized to the grid, all the loads supplied not from UPS system will get into an outage naturally. After that, uncritical loads can be shed from the plant network according to the capacity of diesel generators, which will start to supply the plant in seconds later, and prior to the demand of the critical loads. That kind of a system is called a Load Restore System.
